Wellington's Victory 2.1.3

On the dawn of June 18th, the ceaseless rain that had saturated the countryside of Belgium the day before started to dwindle. With seventy thousand French soldiers at his command, Napoleon's Armee du Nord had recently triumphed over the Prussian Army of the Rhine at Ligney. Their next objective was to capitalize on this success by defeating the unsupported and inexperienced Anglo-Dutch troops that the Duke of Wellington had positioned along the Brussels-Charleroi highway just a few miles south of a small unimportant village named Waterloo.

At his headquarters in Le Caillou that morning, Napoleon deliberated on the impending battle with his officers while anticipating the arrival of additional French Corps from the south. In contrast to the French generals whom Wellington had bested in Spain, Napoleon adamantly maintained that his adversary was ineffective and that English forces were vastly inferior to the French. He envisioned a battle where Wellington's army would be easily consumed, likening it to a light continental breakfast known as 'le petit dejeuner'.
